i'm currently working on a home renovation in the prospect hill section of somerville, ma. in the late 1800's there was an industrial revolution in the area and with it came a lot of rich historic homes to the area, the house i'm working on being one of them. i'm trying to match existing door hardware, which is always a challenge in a historic neighborhood. as it turns out, the home has it's original hardware which dates back to the late 1880's! it's gorgeous, but also very hard to find. other than having the pieces custom made (which costs a pretty penny) i'm on a scavenger hunt to find these vintage pieces in antique hardware houses & other such outfits. luckily i have some very knowledgeable friends over at raybern hardware company who pointed me in the right direction. here are the pieces i'm trying to match.
'broken leaf pattern' pocket door hardware by lockwood, cast bronze, circa 1885...
so far i've managed to find this piece at a couple antique shops, like historic house parts (but they sold these ones already!). I'm not even sure if lockwood is still in business or not, anyone know?...
the other piece i'm looking for is a door knob & keyhole escutcheon. i haven't discovered the pattern name yet, but I do know it's cast iron from sargent hardware in their 1901 catalogue. sargent is definitely still in business but is definitely not making pieces that look like this anymore...
i was able to find the keyhole escutcheon from historic home hardware so i'm sure the rest of the set is out there for me to find too. this is the fun part of my job for sure, i love putting pieces of the puzzle together and learning about the history of the neighborhoods and homes i'm working in, you never know what you're going to find out!
